SUNSEEKER

Eindhoven, The Netherlands, is the primary place in Europe where the professional fields of design and technology merge.

VANTOT created a concept and design for a sustainable and interactive (street) light-installation called Sunseeker, designed for the brand new Victoriapark in Eindhoven.

At Daytime

The Victoria Park functions as a route from the city center to Strijp. To underline this we create a street lighting line that also serves as a viewing line. Multiple light objects search for the lightest places in the park to efficiently capture as much sunlight as possible. The objects are equipped with a light sensor to prevent them from hanging in the shade of trees, buildings and/or clouds.

Sunseeker contributes to awareness. People notice moving objects. Visitors of the park will wonder how solar energy works and learn that it can be well integrated into objects around you. In addition, this design provides the necessary energy gain because the objects do not hang unnecessarily in the shade.

At Nighttime

At dusk, we use the viewing line for other interactions. The pleasant series of lanterns will guide you through the park and indicate the route. But there are many more options, like following along with people walking in the park and triggering interaction such as changing light intensity or color.

In this way, we create both a day and a night experience. We can also program the lighting installation in such a way that experiments can be conducted or that educational programs can be integrated. In addition to awareness, the installation also leads to wonder and conversation.

INTEGRATING
FLEXIBLE
SOLARCELLS

Solar energy, perhaps our future basis for energy production, has many opportunities in the application and integration. We are in the middle of an energy transition towards 2050. We have just had the hottest January day in recorded history and it is, therefore, time for action.

VANTOT’s vision on this subject is clear, we want to break with the current tunnel vision of only covering roofs and fields with solar panels. Our goal is to work on designs that fully integrate solar cell technology, while also having quality from an aesthetic point of view. In this case, we not only stimulate the development of solar technology but also develop products which both have a positive effect on nature/climate and are cheaper in the long run. So: win-win!

SMART CITY
CONCEPT

The element has two movements. Movement one is over the line towards the sunniest spot. Avoiding the shadow. Movement two is around its axis towards the right position. This way the elements will literally dance over the line.

Eindhoven wants to be a sustainable and inclusive city. A city where there is – for everyone! – nice, healthy and sustainable living, working and recreation. A city with healthy air and good soil quality, with an excellent education and good facilities. Now and in the future. We actively achieve these ambitions by working with partners and residents in the city. We increasingly seek for each other, share sustainable ideas, work together and use each other’s expertise.

Following the climate agreement in Paris, the urgency has been established to enforce sustainability laws. Eindhoven immediately responded to this signal: on 23 February 2016, the council adopted the Climate Regulation for the municipality of Eindhoven 2016. To realize Eindhoven’s climate and sustainability ambition, every company, every organization and every inhabitant must participate. As the smartest region, we have the resources and knowledge to test new ideas and get closer to a cleaner, healthier city every day.

With this project plan, we want to actively contribute to achieving climate change and sustainability ambitions of Eindhoven by using the two greatest qualities of the city: Technology & Design. In addition, with this project, we show how technology can contribute to making connections between people. The High Tech Campus is the smartest square kilometer in Europe with more than 160 companies and institutions. One of those companies is the Solliance research institute. Solliance conducts research into the application and integration of flexible solar cells. Solar energy, one of the most important sources of sustainable energy generation, offers many opportunities, in particular through the very diverse application possibilities. The urgency is there. We are in the middle of the energy transition. We have recently had the hottest January day and it is, therefore, time for action. If we want to achieve this with solar panels that are only applied in the current way (lawns and roofs), we will not reach our goals. Then the Netherlands will be covered in a minute. We, therefore, break through the tunnel vision of “covering roofs and fields” and integrate solar cells into materials and designs.
